William Varn, Area Manager, started his career in 2011. He has an A.A. from the University of South Carolina, Salkahatchie, and an A.S. in Forest Technology from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Why did you pursue a career in forestry?

I pursued a career in forestry because I’ve always valued working outdoors and being directly connected to the land. I enjoy practical, hands-on work and seeing tangible results from my efforts over time. Forestry appealed to me because it’s not just about trees—it’s about long-term planning, problem-solving, and balancing environmental responsibility with real-world outcomes. The idea of contributing to something that will still matter decades into the future strongly influenced my decision to follow this path.

What do you like the most about my role with AFM?

What I like most about my role with AFM is the sense of responsibility and trust placed in me, along with the variety the work offers. No two days are the same, and I value being involved in the day-to-day decisions that directly affect forest performance and sustainability. I enjoy working with experienced people, learning continuously, and being part of an organisation that takes pride in doing things properly—safely, sustainably, and with a long-term focus. It’s rewarding to see how my contribution fits into the bigger picture.
