Return to Local Foresters

Mike Calder, Region Manager in Alachua, FL, started his career in 1992. He has an Associate of Science degree in Forestry from Horry-Georgetown Technical College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Saint Leo University, and is a graduate from South Carolina State Fire School. Mike is a Registered Forester in Georgia, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, and a Certified Prescribed Burner in Florida. He is also a member of the Florida Forestry Association.

Why did you pursue a career in forestry? I basically grew up on my grandfather’s farm in rural South Carolina, and that is where I fell in love with the outdoors. The farm was where I learned to fish and hunt, and I saw my first timber sale operation there. After being a firefighter for a few years, I knew I wanted to be outdoors, so I enrolled in forestry school and have not regretted it.

What do you like the most about your role with AFM? Every day is a little different; they may be similar in some ways, but always different. The many different types of landowners make it interesting. One day, you may be working with a large TIMO client, and the next day, you’re working with a small private landowner. It has always been satisfying to know that I have a chance to work with natural resources and hopefully, make a positive difference.
