Clifton Ryland, Regional Technical Forester in Natchitoches, Louisiana, started his career in 2009. He has a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Louisiana Tech University and is a Licensed Real Estate Agent in Arkansas and Louisiana.

Why did you pursue a career in forestry? My father admired the forest, and his fascination with the processes that occurred in nature rivaled his love of law and practicing it. My family recreated quite often in the woods, and I was with them before I started walking. I often had many questions; generally, my questions regarding the forest were met with a simple “I don’t know” from family and friends. When I was 11, he and his brothers purchased a piece of property for recreation. My father, a District Judge, and his two brothers (attorneys) lacked a formal education in forestry, but they did very much have a “love of the land,” which became ingrained in me. When I was 15, my father and his youngest brother passed away unexpectedly. I began working odd jobs, and the older men would always ask me what I wanted to do later in life; when I would respond, “I don’t know,” it was always met with, “Figure it out, but do something you love.” At the time, I found the physical aspects of the work I was doing incredibly rewarding, and I continued making improvements on the family property. Sometime later, I stumbled upon the field of forestry, and the desire to continue my father’s legacy on our property led me into consulting.

What do you like most about your role with AFM?

No day is the same, and I very much enjoy the diversity of services and clients we provide. I find helping people continue a legacy in the forest incredibly rewarding.
