American Forest Management Regional Operations: Maine & Northeast U.S.
The AFM Northeast Region has offices located in Augusta, Milford and Stratton, Maine, and provides forestry services across the state of Maine and parts of New Hampshire. AFM offers a comprehensive range of professional forestry, mapping, forest inventory and real estate services assisting clients in all aspects of forest resource management. Our clients consist of large and small private landowners including investors, family forest owners, institutional organizations and industrial companies. With a wide range of technical expertise and professional staff, AFM manages a variety of natural resources projects for multiple clients.
Forest Management – AFM’s Northeast Region currently manages over 1,000,000 acres of forestland in Maine and New Hampshire. Our forestland management is tailored to our clients’ needs, from timber utilization to wildlife habitat and enhancement. Lands managed by AFM are certified under either the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) or the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) programs.
AFM provides harvesting services through carefully selected contractors who have the equipment and experience to meet the objectives of each harvest plan. AFM has access to different types of logging equipment and will select the type that best suits the situation subject to landowner approval. AFM will provide on-site supervision of the logging operations to assure terms of the harvest plan and timber harvesting contract are accomplished. All activities including post-harvest stabilization will comply with Maine Best Management Practices for Forestry.
Landowners in Maine traditionally sell stumpage when harvesting timber. This can put the landowner at a disadvantage whenever the logger is unable to market products to their highest value. AFM provides an alternative whereby timber is marketed directly to wood consuming mills. Loggers are contracted by AFM to provide services. AFM uses this alternative method because it is in the client’s interest to control how timber is processed into the highest value products and sold to buyers. Unlike some other service providers, AFM does not take ownership of the wood, nor retain profit from the timber.
In addition to timber harvesting, AFM offers other forest management services such as:
Forest management plans including:
Maine Tree Growth renewal
Maine Forest Service Woods Wise
Road and bridge engineering
Boundary line renewal
Wood Flow Management
Mapping – AFM uses state of the art digital mapping services known as Geographic Information System or GIS. We have a wide variety of data for Maine including the most recent aerial photography from the USDA. We can produce a timber type map for clients and include boundaries, roads, waters, critical wildlife habitat, topography, and other features. Global positioning system (GPS) devices are used to properly locate properties on a map. AFM can supply maps in both Adobe Reader (PDF) and paper format as well as property boundaries in digital format (KML) suitable for viewing the property location on internet based Google Earth, Garmin GPS and map products, and other software. Owners of multiple forest properties can consolidate their mapping into one digital file to facilitate planning and property records.
Our GIS mapping and analysis capability is used to support our foresters with forest management, and timber inventory. GIS mapping has become an integral part of our company’s business. In today’s complex regulatory climate, the analysis of spatial data before going into the field saves our clients time and money.
AFM’s foresters use GIS for:
Timber stand delineation, acreage calculation and database design
Long-range forest planning associated with timber stand and inventory information
Determination of Riparian Management Zone (RMZ) boundaries on forestlands
Forest road construction, management and improvements
Road maintenance and access control plans
Timber harvest planning
Mapping habitat protection areas
Forest Inventory – AFM can design and implement a timber inventory to meet the client’s needs regardless of ownership size. Timber inventories are designed to survey stand structure, age class, species composition, and volume totals. AFM uses a number of industry standard inventory and timber cruise software packages and growth models to calculate existing and future volumes and forest conditions. AFM performs extensive timber surveys on large ownerships, as well as intensive surveys on small acreages. These timber cruises are often used to evaluate current stocking, calculate long-term timber yields for sustainability, appraise timber value, calculate timber depletion values to reduce tax liability, and to estimate volume produced from a timber sale.
